If you would like to know what the causes of anxiety attacks are, then read on. In this article, we’ll look at what is going on inside you when an episode kicks off.

Defining anxiety

Before I talk about the causes, here is some background information which will make everything much clearer.

Anxiety is a common emotion, perhaps even the most basic of all emotions. While unpleasant, it is not at all dangerous.

This common emotion signify s a state of apprehension or fear, caused by the anticipation of a threat, event or situation, either real or imagined.

A different breed altogether

While most people will certainly experience various levels of anxiety at some point in their lives, most will not experience the extreme type that we are referring to as an anxiety/panic attack. This extreme type can be terrifying, causing breathlessness, tingling, dizziness etc. And that is the more mild effects!

What causes the attacks?

Remember, anxiety is merely a response to a perceived threat or danger. But what about the extreme anxiety, also known as “panic attacks”?

You may have heard of the fight/flight response, which is something we all have built-in, and is used to protect the individual from harm. What it does is put the body in to an altered state ready to either fight or flee from a threat. It was a vital “tool” for the survival of our ancestors, whom when met with danger, this automatic response would propel them to act immediately as necessary. In truth, even today this fight/flight response can come in handy.

High levels of anxiety can engage this fight/flight response, and is the most likely cause of your anxiety (panic) attacks. So your next question might be “what causes the high levels of anxiety?” – and while this is a valid question, the answer will unlikely produce any practical benefits. This is because unless your high levels of anxiety are caused by extreme conditions, you will unlikely be able to fully avoid all situations where “high levels” of anxiety exist.

Lets go a little deeper

When you are confronted with a threat, or danger, your brain sends signals to a section of you nervous system. One part of this section is responsible for preparing your body for action, and the other is for calming your body down again. When either is activated, the effect is WHOLE BODY, a kind of “all or nothing” effect.

When you have an anxiety attack, it can take a while for the effects to wear off. The system kicks in, and it will continue for a while. However, the part of your nervous system responsible for calming you down will kick in after a period of time, so balance is always brought about. No matter what you do, your body will always return you back to normal eventually. This hints at why although these attacks are horrible, they can’t ultimately hurt you. Your body will restore balance regardless of what you’re thinking at the time.
